Protect the first screen

Decide what a visitor needs immediately. The main heading, useful supporting text and primary action should appear without waiting for optional effects. Heavy background media can compete with the content that explains your business.

Give every dependency a job

A library is worthwhile when it solves a real problem. For a small navigation menu or hover effect, native browser features may already be enough. Review third-party widgets carefully: each can add network requests, execution time and maintenance work.

Size images for their context

An image displayed in a small card rarely needs the same resolution as a full-screen visual. Use responsive image sizes and reserve the layout space before an image loads. Load below-the-fold imagery when needed, while ensuring the main visible image can arrive promptly.

Measure real journeys

Test on a phone as well as a large monitor. Explore navigation, read a long page and complete the contact form. Lab measurements help identify issues, but real visitors use different connections and devices. Treat performance as ongoing work rather than a score achieved once.

Keep the launch lean

Delay features without a clear purpose. Use animation to explain a change or support orientation, and respect reduced-motion preferences. A fast page that communicates clearly is a stronger demonstration of craft than a complicated page that interrupts the task.

Put the thinking into practice.
